Things to do in Ålesund

So great that you are considering visiting us in this great city. Here you will get some ideas and tips about what you can do here.

Country: Norge
County: Møre og Romsdal
Region: Sunnmøre

Ålesund is and has been very important for fisheries, which takes place just outside here. The boats can dock on all sides and stand in shelter. It is also because of fishing that the city has become great throughout history.

But then it burnt down completely in 1904 to be rebuilt in a very picturesque Art Nouveau style that you find in numerous streets today. If you want to explore this style of architecture, it might be worth visiting the Jugendstilsenteret at Hellebrua, Apotekergata and Kongens gate. Hotel Noreg is located in Kongens gate, which incidentally is the only street in the world with more than 95% art nouveau style.

View. Why not take a trip up the stairs to Fjellstua at Aksla? Unless the weather is bad, the stairs are open around the clock. There are 418 steps, but there are both seating options and lighting along the entire staircase. You can also book a taxi at reception to this magnificent view, or consider our city train "Bytoget", which has drop-in ticket sales at Storneskaia. If Aksla is too high up, it can also be nice to have a view from Lihaugen or Grimmerhaugen.

Do you like to swim? So feel free to try our modern "Bybadet" swimming hall. All our guests get a 10% discount there (Ask at reception for a discount coupon). The public bath is located on the Exhibition Square. And if the weather is absolutely terrible, you can also get there through Aksla Parkering.

If you don't want to get wet, but still like water, then we can recommend the city's aquarium: Atlanterhavsparken Aquarium. There you not only see how the fjords here look underwater, but you can also eat the city's best fishcakes there. If you want to get there by public transport, you can take a 10-minute bus ride with bus line 1 from "St Olavs plass" to "Tuenesvegen" (direction Sævollen/Slinningen). You can pay by card on the bus.

Do you want to be a real city person here? Then we can warmly recommend "Ålesund Storsenter" shopping centre. There you will not only find grocery stores and great cafes, but also bookstores, electronics stores, toy stores and clothing stores.

In Ålesund, you are also quite close to these great destinations that may require a bus, car or boat.
- Alnes lighthouse
- Geirangerfjord
- Hjørundfjord
- Bird island of Runde

- The Atlantic Road

- Midsund-stairs & Molde

- Romsdals gondola & Rampestreken in Åndalsnes

The reception can always give you a bit more information, or go directly to the tourist information office which is a 2 minutes' walk away. Why only 2 minutes? Because right now you are looking at a hotel located in the heart of the city. Here is where it happens in this city, and we wish you a wonderful time here!
