About Hotel Noreg

Our hotel is supposed to be a refuge for relaxation and tranquility, where guests can immerse themselves in Ålesund's rich history, culture and art.

The tapestry in the breakfast room

Since 1954, Hotel Noreg has welcomed our guests in the heart of Ålesund.

Ålesund, a pearl along Norway's coast, has always had a deep connection to the sea. At the beginning of the 20th century, the town was known as a busy fishing town, where fishing boats dominated the harbor and the fishermen were the town's soul. A good number of the fishermen spent the night at Hotel Noreg and visited the local pub in the basement precisely because of the proximity to the quay.

Along the picturesque waterfronts, with their characteristic pointed roofs, boats were close together. The fishermen, dressed in their sturdy work clothes, could be seen intently busy with the day's catch. They unloaded baskets filled with cod, herring and other seafood, ready to be processed and sold both locally and for export. The riches of the sea were the very lifeblood of Ålesund, and every single fishing boat contributed to the city's economy and culture.

Behind the harbor, narrow cobbled streets stretched into the town, where fish restaurants, smokehouses and salteries lay side by side. It was not uncommon to see whole families involved in the fishing industry, from children helping to sort fish, to women working on cleaning and packing.

An important part of Ålesund's fishing history was the annual herring fishery. When the herring came in towards the coast, the town came alive with intense activity. Fishermen from all over the region flocked to Ålesund, and the harbor was filled with ships loaded with glistening silverfish. The city's market was a bustling place where fishmongers and merchants did their business, and the smell of freshly caught fish filled the air.

Ålesund's strategic location also made it a hub for trade and transport. From here, the catch was sent to both national and international markets, and the town's growth and prosperity flourished in tandem with the success of the fishery.

Today, you can still sense the whir of history when you walk along the old wharves and look at the historic buildings that stand as testimony to Ålesund's heyday as a fishing town. Although the town has developed and modernized, the memories of the busy fishing days live on in the soul of this unique coastal town.

We strive to be the city's leading destination for hospitality and comfort, where guests feel welcome, valued and inspired. We want to create memorable experiences for our guests through a combination of outstanding service, unique design and authentic hospitality. Our vision is to be an oasis of calm and well-being in the heart of Ålesund, and to be a proud representative of the Norwegian tradition of hospitality.

and local culture.
